Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) by Anne R — 01 Apr 2009
A science-fiction classic, this film revealed that the genre could be a strong delivery method for social commentary. Yes, the flying saucers, the dialogue of Klaatu, and the robot behemoth Gort are campy fun, but this film is also a message to the world on how violence and strife and acting forcefully out of fear and misunderstanding is a danger to all.
Though the arrival of Gort and Klaatu at first seems menacing, by the end of the film you are almost filled with the hope that one day they would arrive in reality and give direction to the masses who are confused and misguided.
A very bold film to make and release in the midst of the Cold War, and is just as relevant in today's cultural climate.
