Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) by Ryan S — 18 Jul 2009
A great STORY does not need great special effects, yet for it's day, the effects were as groundbreaking as the flip on the other sci-fi films of it's day. It's not the aliens that are the enemy, we are, and the film isn't afraid to balance good old alien invasion 'horror' with thought provoking dialogue. The context of this film.
Is placed dead center of the Cold War, nations fearing other nation's abilities and wills to use nuclear weapons. The movie is ultimately not sci-fi, but a serious anti-war film. Watch this with the historical context in mind, and this movie becomes timeless.
