Review of The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961) by Stephen M — 17 Jun 2008
Interesting disaster story where the end of the world is nigh. Set in the offices of the London Daily Express, it's a fast paced film that not only picks up on the fears of the time but is proving to be more than a little prophetic, at least with the consequences of Man's actions.
I first saw this film many years ago on TV and was fascinated by it. Recently I saw a copy on VHS cassette in my local garden centre for £2.99 so bought and and was glad I did. On watching it again the global warming theme is relevant as are the human stories and (much as I hate to admit it) the role of the press in such a disaster.
I think the best critic was my 17 year old son who sat glued to the screen, despite the film being in "cruddy black and white" and pronounced it to be "cool for an old film and with a fab ending".
Need I say more?
