Review of The Day of the Jackal (1973) by Laird J — 11 Dec 2008
Essentially a procedural shot in a spartan, 70s thriller style, veering between documentary-like realism and quick cutting action. The cool thing is, in addition to seeing the police investigation side of the "procedure," there's also the assassin's step by step operation.
Cat and mouse indeed... Almost as cold and nihilistic as the French Connection, but it never quite invests enough in character or personality to read much into it. I think a lot of films, In the Line of Fire particularly, owe this one a great deal.
