Review of The Darkness (2016) by Matt V — 17 May 2016
While it's not as good as "The Conjuring", "The Darkness" is very much a solid horror film and better than most of the horror films that have come out in the past 5 years. I, myself, jumped multiple times and found myself at the edge of my seat several times. With a story line that is more original than it is carbon copy, "The Darkness" makes perfect use of its' originality by keeping you in the dark on who or what is terrorizing this family. The film keeps you in the dark, literally and figuratively. The film slowly reveals things, keeping you in a state of suspense. Making the character Mikey autistic also gives the film a unique edge.
Now the film is not perfect by any means. The ending is not very strong and somewhat of a let down. It's probably the part that is the most unoriginal. There are also one or two parts that sort of lag along. I also don't think it made full use of everything it had. I wanted it to go a little farther. A couple of other minor issues but nothing too crippling.
In closing, "The Darkness" is a small budget horror film that does what it is supposed to do: scare you. It's one that I would gladly see again and it's one I would most likely buy in the future on DVD/Blu-ray.
