Review of The Darkest Hour (2011) by James D — 19 Aug 2012
This film could have been a really good Alien Invasion film, but it just misses the mark. It starts well, the set up is good but the characters are pretty bland (you could argue that they are just normal, boring people). Most of the film is feels like it is setting up something really big, but it never happens. This would have bee a great first half of an invasion film if they had cut it down to about an hour and then made the second hour the "war" they spent the entire film setting up. But it just feels like it doesn't finish, just ends with no conclusion. Maybe they were hoping for a sequel, but after this, not likely.
The idea of the aliens is good, but after waiting most of the film to see them, they were a huge disappointment. They looked like really bad playstation characters. The rest of the effects were pretty good, but nothing special.
The only highlight for me was Joel Kinnaman, he is one of my new favs (looking forward to seeing what he does with Robocop), but he was so under used.
So, overall, a good first half of what could have been a great Alien Invasion film that never good finished.
