Review of The Dark Tower (2017) by Tom B — 28 Aug 2017
Steven King was the man back in the 1990s, but my last memory of enjoying something with his name attached to it, had to be The Mist (2007). DARK TOWER'S level of quality doesn't really surpass the pilot episode of an interesting television series.
According to what I read on Wikipedia, this has a lot of little interesting production facts that ultimately led to its demise. For starters, J.J. Abrams was originally involved in the project (ten years ago) but he dropped out.
It was then suppose to be a trilogy of films with a two-season miniseries to bridge the gaps between them. That idea lost funding. In 2013, Russell Crowe was casted to be the lead for this movie adaptation, but he didn't want to do it either.
Now in 2017, it gets frantically over-advertised, to a point where most viewers wish they had a fast-forward button to hit whenever the "Gunslingers Creed" gets uttered. Ultimately, this movie is the end product of an eight novel universe ravaged through a broken washing machine.
It's only 95-minutes long, which means this is probably the shortest action/fantasy film to make theaters over the past couple of years. It is the first of something that was supposed to be much longer and better, but completely degraded by a lack of renowned direction and casting.
Yeah... they were now been able to get Matthew McConaughey on board as a villain, but he probably now wants to shoot himself in the face, because once a villain, never a villain again. The poor guy probably just flushed a promising Marvel role down the toilet.
