The Dark Tower is a continuation from the books. It is a sequel. If you have never read the books, then many of the nuances in the plot will be lost on you. Even more so if you have never picked up a Steven King book.
Many of his stories and books intertwine into this series. It is complex. Even without all the backstory, they did a good job with the movie. It was entertaining for my wife who had never read the books and prompted her to ask if she can borrow the series from me to read.
