Review of The Dark Tower (2017) by Neil P — 14 Nov 2017
This would probably be an "adequate" "Res evil" style action film if I didn't know what the premise was actually capable. As it is this is a crushingly disappointing attempt at adapting King's book series.
The main issue is the speed at which it races through the plot never giving us time to explore and get to grips with the locations, ideas and characters. Why is the man in black so intent on destroying the tower? Where is the Tower? Is it technology or magic? What were gunslingers? People who haven't read the books will be clueless while those who have are left scratching their heads at this whistle stop tour that tries to achieve in 90mins what King did over 7 books.
It's a shame as Elba and mconaughey are good and the direction/look isn't terrible. But this feels like a rushed TV pilot or show that has been told it has two episodes left to wrap up the story before cancellation.
A serious exception to what has been a good year for movie adaptations of king's works.
