Most Stephen King books make great films. The Shining, Misery, Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile, Carrie are all masterpeices. Big changes work, as long as the core of the story is respected. This movie was real poo.
The worst of all was Idris Elba's absurfd performance, which was not in any way remin iscent of a gun slinger, or of a bitter but noble hero. In fact, givcen Roland's ethnicity, lumping him in with King Arthhur, and a gun slinger of old west seems kind of silly.
It just made you go "huh?" Here is this fancy boy black British guy that seems more like a suburban professional then a tough and gritty gun fighter. I could more easily see him sitting in Starbucks chatting up the women that work there.
I think MOuntain Between Us is a much better fit for him. I could see him being a doctor, and someone that an older woman would become interested in, and I can see them hiking around. Like a Patagonia advert.
