I just got back from a 5pm showing and I loved it.
You absolutely can NOT go in expecting a story you "know". it's a totally new story. many elements are the same as ones we know and love from the DT books , but many are completely new. the effect were outstanding. the acting was outstanding. the story was... surprisingly good!
Go into it expecting a gunslinger story, not THE gunslinger story, if you know what I mean.
On it's own, as a stand alone, and as a totally new story, it was a really good movie. i'm not saying great, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. just fun! 4 stars solid!
THE MOVIE ROCKED, YO!
It's not a story you've seen before, it's totally new. but the FEEL is there.
Go and enjoy it for yourself!!!
