Review of The Dark Tower (2017) by Nathan L — 03 Aug 2017

This movie entertained me for every minute of its runtime! Idris Elba, Tom Taylor and Matthew McConaughey were brilliant in their assigned roles. The gun fights were great, effects fit the movie and the South Africa set for Mid-World provided an "other-worldly" feel.

I've read all the books (twice) and understand that this is not a straight adaptation and am actually the more excited because of it. Knowing that this is another "turn on the wheel' for characters I've already seen pursue their destiny once is exciting because I don't know how it will end this time and how the characters will go about it.

As an average, every-day movie-goer I didn't notice many of the technical "flaws" pointed out by professional critics because that's not what I, or most, movie goers go to notice. I was taken in with the story and the characters and the relationship between Roland and Jake.

It was about getting the fallen/broken knight back on his righteous track after being focused on revenge for too long. Jake's display of courage and selflessness inspire Roland to do just that. Now that we've been introduced and left wishing the movie was longer, and wanting more material, and a better understanding of backstory.

..the follow on projects are primed for success. One of the reasons, I think, some are critical of the movie on its own is that they expected it to be the FULL story and it's not and never was supposed to be.

The "epic" nature of the story will build across these next TV and movie offerings. And I for one can't wait to see them all!!
