Review of The Dark Knight (2008) by William B — 27 Nov 2015
After a couple of viewings, I had to finally admit to myself that I will never understand the fascination with this film.
All of the hallmarks of poor filmmaking are here. It's an overpriced B-movie, weak, underdeveloped characters (though I would concede that maybe, by this point in history, that we should already be attached to them...?), fast digital editing during action sequences to make it seem EXCITING, and something that had me yelling at the screen at one point...ol' Commissioner Gordon giving a bedside update to Harvey Dent, telling him shit that he already knows but needs to be explained to the audience. Because bad filmmaking.
Oh, and it's dark. Really dark. Cos it's a "serious" film. And the Batman is very serious, thus reinforced by his "Nathan Explosion of Metalocalypse" voice.
Ledger is great, about the only redeemable quality in the film. But he wasn't able to save it.
Films are now made and marketed for the 14 year-old boy in all of us. I discreetly euthanized my inner-child when he dozed off somewhere during in my late teens.
A mercy killing.
