Review of The Dark Knight (2008) by Merijn J — 15 Jan 2018
(98/100).
The Dark Knight is the definition of a comic book/superhero movie. Christopher Nolan juggles human morality, decision making and what it means to be a hero in an epic, complicated and overall great piece of movie art. The Dark Knight challenges Batman (Christian Bale) in a way we've never seen before, Batman (Christian Bale) meets this unstoppable force: Not the Joker, but anarchy. And has to defeat it in a way that is unfair, morally questionable, but, ultimately the right decision. The Dark Knight is really a tragic story: Batman (Christian Bale) puts all his money on, what he thinks, will be his succesor of fighting crime in a better way. But, ultimately, even the best of people can get manipulated by anarchy (The Joker) and become the thing they dedicated their lives to to fight. Batman (Christian Bale) even choses Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) over the one thing that kept him at bay, Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Overall, The Dark Knight is a genius piece of film making and one of, if not, the best movie I've seen over the past 30 years.
