Review of The Dark Knight (2008) by Elle P — 13 Dec 2018
A New Class of Criminal.
With the tenth anniversary of The Dark Knight being this year, it only seems appropriate to take a look back one a film that has made history. The Dark Knight, a movie directed by Christopher Nolan, is arguably the greatest movie from the entire Batman series. With actors Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Heath Ledger all giving strong performances, this movie has many things that make it a great film to watch. The symbolism throughout this movie is one of good and evil, and can be related to almost any other plot along those lines. With a dark twist on your normal superhero movie, The Dark Knight is a thrill to watch. The Dark Knight is a movie that changed our world forever, whether we realized it or not.
Christopher Nolan has had many great hits in the past, but The Dark Knight really sends it over the top, for me. The director of movies like Insomnia and Memento has really proven to be a fantastic director after his not-so-great movie The Prestige. One of the aspects that makes this movie one of the greatest movies of all time is quality the action scenes. Christopher Nolan did a wonderful job at creating scenes that keep the audience on their toes. The action scenes are packed with stunts and alongside a great score, each action scene keeps you enthralled in the movie. Most movies with lots of action scenes can get repetitive and often seem very cheesy, but not this movie. Nolan does an amazing job at sticking to the plot all the while making us all stay glued to the screen. Many say that they do not like to watch superhero movies because they are boring and not well done in comparison to most other movies; The Dark Knight is the antithesis to every other superhero move ever made prior its release. There is no happy ending, there are not scenes filled with foolish acting, and often times you may even forget that you are watching a superhero movie, because it is really that good. The Dark Knight is an incredible success for Christopher and his team, and we have seen him knock one out of the park yet again. The Dark Knight has played an important role in not only all comic book movies and shows, but also in every movie that we see now. The way that Christopher Nolan intertwined real life events with a super hero movie was something that had never really seen before. The way in which Nolan portrayed the world in The Dark Knight was obviously a darker, more intense version of our real world, but it is still a closely correlated world to that of our own. The film world was increasingly linking the problems of our everyday lives to the characters of their movies, and one of the films that obviously applied this method was The Dark Knight. We also see that the director might have been referencing himself throughout the movie with quotes that may have had double meanings. One instance in which we see an example of this is when the Joker says, "this town deserves a better class of criminal." It is possible that Nolan is referring to himself in the world of Hollywood and how he knew that he was going to change the world in not only comic book movies, but also every movie that we would come to see. Before The Dark Knight, comic book movies were not dark and powerful like this one, and after it was released it was apparent that Nolan became a "new class of criminal" throughout the film industry.
Alongside other great actors in this movie, such as Christian Bale, Heath Ledger delivered a surreal performance that can only be remembered as one of the greatest supporting actor roles in history. Heath Ledger has gone down as one of the greatest actors of all time, and a large part of that is due to his role in this film. Ledger died in 2008, shortly before the film was released. Even into 2009, Ledger continued to win film awards for best supporting actor, which has basically never been done before. Some say that his drug overdose was, in part, was due to the drugs that he was taking in order to complete his role as one of the greatest villains of all time. Heath Ledger showed the world a new standard for a movie villain that would change our world forever.
The symbolism throughout this movie is a great example of the good vs. evil that we see in our everyday lives. The Joker could be compared to the things in our world that we see are changing our world for the worse. Whether it is drugs or war, the evil things seem to always be poking at our society. There is always going to be evil in our lives, and we are always going to see the good fight that evil, but hopefully we can always witness the good triumph. Some say that a movies villain is a great indicator of the quality of a movie, and with that being said, this movie is still one of the greatest.
Overall, we can see that this movie is considered to be not only one of the greatest superhero movies of all time, but also one of the greatest of any movie. From an incredible director to a score that adds so beautifully to the ambiance of each scene, this movie is one to be watched time and time again without getting sick of. Christopher Nolan did an outstanding job at creating an absolutely mind-blowing film that would stay a favorite of many forever. When this movie was first released in 2008, we knew that it was a great movie; what we did not know, was that it would change the world of film forever and stay relevant for as long as we may live. For those of us who have been watching this movie time and time again over the last decade, we recognize the impact that it has had in the creation of movies in modern times. If you have not seen The Dark Knight, you are missing a new class of movie that this city needed.
