Review of The Dark Crystal (1982) by David G — 16 Feb 2010
Watching this today is like taking a hit of pure, uncut nostalgic heroin. From the moment the Universal logo appears against Trevor Jones' unforgettable musical score The Dark Crystal is an epic marionette marvel, a clever and lovable fantasy adventure with imaginative creatures and tons of detail.
Everything from the smallest insects and rodents to the creepy-ass Garthim (which scared the crap out of me when I was a kid) have that Jim Henson magic about them - he and Frank Oz really outdid themselves as did the puppetry teams that brought the creatures to life.
It's not quite as good as Labyrinth, after all it is at its core your average Lord of the Rings fantasy tale with Fro- uh, Jen battling against the odds on a quest to Mount Doo- uh, the Castle of the Crystal in a desperate bid to save the world from evil, but David Bowie or not it's still a brilliant childhood classic.
