Review of The Darjeeling Limited (2007) by Michael H — 15 Aug 2014
A little grittier and less controlled than your usual Wes Anderson joint. An effect, I'm sure, of so much location shooting. The Wes Anderson we're familiar with is a very finicky studio-oriented movie maker.
I think he's more effective when he can take control of a location, whether it's entirely created in the studio or a site that he takes over and re-makes as his own, but, for a movie where he left the nest to stretch his wings, it came out pretty good and often quite entertaining.
He didn't leave the nest just to fall to the ground. He's returned to the safety of a tidy, controlled nest since DARJEELING LIMITED, but the experiment, while not an unqualified success, was by no means a failure either.
