Review of The Darjeeling Limited (2007) by Greg K — 18 Jan 2011
It's another Wes Anderson movie, and you'll either love it, as I did, or hate it, as a number of people seem to. To me, it's a joy to watch the attention payed to the tiniest of details, from the hand-painted designs on the main characters' luggage, to one of them never wearing shoes and it never being pointed out or explained, to the inclusion of actors in previous Anderson movies in cameo roles, to the Jim Henson workshop manufactured tiger.
The cast was, as always, perfectly selected, the cinematography and editing beautiful, the sets sublime. The Indian locations and supporting cast were mesmerising.
If that's not enough for you, well, the story isn't probably going to carry the film for you. It's no great departure from his previous works, and not quite as strong as it should be. But I enjoyed it, regardless, and for me the other elements that make up an Anderson movie more than compensate for any weakness in the script.
