Review of The Darjeeling Limited (2007) by Tyrone H — 05 Apr 2011
I think a felt about this film like a lot of people have always felt about his films. I think that while technically he keeps getting better, he is moving away from the days of his best work in films like Rushmore, The Roayal Tenenbaums and The Life Equatic, all of which I love.
I felt that this was his most self indulgent work to date. The characters and story are not as well realised as his previous work and that the Director himself seems to have concentrated on getting the strangeness and beauty of his location across, which he does admirably, but took his eye off the ball with the story and characters and character development. The 3 main leads are fine but they do not connect to the emotional heart of this film becuse I don't think that it really has one. That said, it was a beatiful film to watch, wonderfully shot and while it is lacking in something, that doesn't detract from this being watchable. Unfortunately, by this Dirctors own high standards, that simply isn't enough. I don't think I can bring myself to watch his nex film, the adaptation of my favourite childrens novel, The Fantastic Mr Fox.
