Review of The Darjeeling Limited (2007) by Tina M — 20 Feb 2012
I am actually struggling to begin to write this review because I am not quite sure what I thought of the film. As a supposed comedy, it had its moments but the film really felt like a drama dealing with three brothers on a spiritual journey as well as a journey to grow closer together.
After having not seen each other for a year following the death of their father, the oldest brother (Owen Wilson) tricks his two younger brothers (Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman) into going to find their mother in India.
Wes Anderson's style once again dominates the visuals. His lateral tracking shots, swish panning, and symmetry may be a little strange for some viewers but it is effective for the scripts that he and friends come up with.
But again, this film wasn't as funny as I think they imagined it would be. That isn't to say it wasn't enjoyable. I quite enjoyed the chemistry between the three brothers and the recurring gags they had with each other.
The chemistry is what keeps the film from falling flat.
