Review of The Darjeeling Limited (2007) by Chads. — 26 Oct 2007
With the absence of the arch-comic tone of this filmmaker's past movies, when the three brothers participate in the Indian culture, they appear sincere in their efforts to assimilate, without a trace of condescencion and hubris.
As "The Darjeeling Limited" goes meta- on us, the mature tone of the film then becomes the joke, even though the film itself isn't jokey. Its artificiality becomes the ultimate expression of deadpan comedy.
Remarkably, when the narrative is resumed after its feat of literary pyrotechnics, "The Darjeeling Limited" still manages to be reasonably earnest and sad. Is the film improved by its own self-reflexiveness? Probably not.
Good performances by the three leads would've been enough to recommend this slight(in a good sense) film about life and fiction.
