Review of The Darjeeling Limited (2007) by Phild — 21 Jan 2008
I'm with Droog on this one. Self-indulgent, tedious and totally unfulfilling. I'm also a fan of Mr Anderson's previous work but the Darjeeling Limited feels like it was made by a poor Wes Anderson imitator.
Characters have no character beyond their quirky appearances. No plot. Arbitrary, unamusing dialogue. Scene after scene of irrelevant, stylized, totally random interaction, leading nowhere. Totally unfunny.
Also, lots of gratuitous slo-mo shots of the characters walking around, a device which infuriated me so much that the fifth time it happened I almost left the cinema. I was praying for this mess to end at least half an hour before it finally did.
I'm being really harsh because I expected great things. Wes, track down whoever made this film using your name and try to save your reputation.
