Review of The Danish Girl (2015) by Alex T — 13 Jan 2016
Beautifully made, with superb production design and direction from Tom Hooper. The tone of the film looks tremendous and Alexandre Desplat ones again provides a perfectly pitched score. I cannot fault that, and the acting is equally outstanding.
Eddie Redmayne is very good as the 'title character', although for me it is a film about Gerda - a wife, and a friend of Lilly. Alicia Vikander is stunning, absolutely fantastic in this film. Nevertheless, although the film's subject matter is mementous, you never quite feel there is enough substance to sustain the duration.
It becomes repetitive - emotional, but repetitive, and predictable. It is rather tough to portray the events on screen, because much of this relates to how one feels inside rather than what is seen outside, and as such, it can never leave anything other than an admirable but muted impression.
