Review of The Danish Girl (2015) by Camille R — 31 Jan 2016
The more I think about this movie, the less I like it. And the poor reviews I've read have not been helping it. People everywhere have been saying this is one of the most inaccurate portrayals of being transgender ever put to film, which is unfortunate because the woman they are representing was a true pioneer for transgender people everywhere.
In hindsight, this movie, more than anything, is condescending. It's not only condescending to the people it's trying to represent, but it's condescending to its audience. It's manipulative because it pretends to be representing it's subject with 100% accuracy, and it's not.
I wanted to like this movie, and for a while, I did. In terms of acting, directing, cinematography and production design, this movie is great. But the way it handles the subject matter is beyond condescending.
If you want to watch a real movie about what it is like to be transgender, watch Tangerine. It looks at the subject matter in a humorous way, but not in a condescending way, I very highly reccomend it.
This movie, on the other hand, was a massive disappointment.
