Review of The Danish Girl (2015) by Noah D — 24 Feb 2016
What is certainly going to be referred to as The Oscar Bait Film of the year from me, The Danish Girl promises much, but fails to deliver. Maybe it's because I'm just not a fan of Director Tom Hooper's style, but The Danish Girl almost always seemed to play things safe and I was actually taken out of the film quite a bit.
We're witnessing an incredible and often heart-breaking journey of this couple, but I never found myself caring because I was never emotionally invested with these characters. Eddie Redmayne is expectedly great, but co-star Alicia Vikander really stole the show from out under him! With both this and Ex Machina, Vikander has had one hell of a year and is surely going to be recognized at the upcoming Oscars.
Even with these great performances, I was never invested with the story or characters which is disappointing given what could have been. The Danish Girl features great work from Eddie Redmayne and an incredible performance by Alicia Vikander, but plays things too safe and is never as emotional or complex as it should have been.
2.3 out of 5 Stars!
