Review of The Danish Girl (2015) by Dylan M — 06 Mar 2016
The Danish Girl tells the incredible story of Ina Wegener, a man who progressively becomes a woman. Throughout the film Ina's wife Gerta, goes through many emotional complications watching her husband go through the process.
The film has two brilliant performances from Redmayne and Alicia Vikander. They both perfectly execute their roles and are given equally as important story. Although I felt Redmayne's desire for an Oscar was too oblivious in the film, hurting the story.
The movie treats the sensitive and delicate topic very well. Although the film blatantly shows its desires for awards. But director Tom Hopper plays the film movie safe and doesn't go outside the box with anything.
Its a basic simple story and Hopper has issues with expanding beyond it. Held back by the script the film just kept becoming repetitive. We are fed with the same details for a majority of the film. Aside from the lack of moxie from Hopper, the movie did have incredible cinematography.
Hopper really captured the era and setting of the film quite nicely. The Danish Girl brings an interesting story to the screen but doesn't deliver enough substanceto be a stronger film.
