Review of The Danish Girl (2015) by Jordon M — 02 Apr 2016
The story of one of the earliest cases of a man having surgery to become a woman is brought to the big screen in a movie that looks good, has a very interesting true story, a couple of fine young actors leading the picture.
..and yet I felt disconnected and it felt average to me. How can a movie about transgender pioneer so long ago, in an era when such a thing would be so utterly frowned upon end up not being engaging? I think the issue is that I never felt it got inside the head or tried to make me feel what it might feel like to be Lili.
I got that she was distressed about her situation, but I never felt I understood it. I just never engaged with it. It also just felt like award bait. I wanted this to have a little more life in it, and it seems with two actors giving their all with some nice period production design.
..that it just should've had more life to it. And it didn't. It felt like an outsider was trying to tell me what it is like to be a transgender in an even less forgiving era.
