Review of The Danish Girl (2015) by Dragonsfoe . — 02 May 2016
Redmayne + Vikander = Acting Gold.
The Danish Girl may be over-directed and overly dramatic but is amazingly successful when it comes to its two fantastic leads.
The film is great at convincing the viewer of the realism of being a period piece. With stylistic cinematography and great production design this film is nothing short of beautiful. The two leads in this film are revelations. Both Redmayne and Vikander both continue their streaks in continuing to be two of best breakout performers in the past few years. They both add more layers to their characters than if they were cast for anyone else. Alexandre Desplat also continues his streak as a great and illustrious composer.
Tom Hooper should have directed the film more subtlety. Many major moments come off as overly dramatic, and occasionally laughable. He should have executed the sensitive and controversial story more carefully to make it more effective.
Overall, The Danish Girl is a serviceable film with great acting, though over-directed.
