Review of The Danish Girl (2015) by Jonathan B — 06 Jun 2016
I feel very bad because I did actually guffaw very loudly during this film. There's a scene where, having had an argument with her transvestite husband, Alicia Vikander stomps off into the kitchen and is seen to determinedly chop a carrot.
I couldn't decide if the choice of phallic vegetable was deliberate or not but to my "Carry On" sense of humour it did seem a rather unfortunately comic item. It has to be said, that Eddie Redmayne and the rest of the cast give wonderful performances in this beautifully filmed story.
It's a very different and compelling story but I felt it lacked substance. I also found the central character of Einar/Lili to be difficult to like and empathise with, partly due to his insensitivity towards his wife.
Without question, this movie is both timely and interesting but actually, it's just a little bit drab and dull.
