Review of The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys (2002) by Tasha W — 02 Feb 2009
I preface this with the observation that it can be difficult to break out of the mold for coming of age stories, and this is a basic coming of age story. While I am not always a huge fan of integrating animation into the story, I liked it here.
The use of the animation to help the kids process their angst / conflicts and to help them maintain their power was effective. Margieâ??s story line added a certain depth to it all, and Francis was not necessarily honorable in his reaction to her revelation.
That helped make it more realistic and honest. Outside of that, however, it felt a little contrived, it felt like it was trying a little too hard. Jody did a good job, and this was obviously more of a comedy than â??Doubtâ??, but Meryl has now set the standard for strict nuns.
