Review of The Damned United (2009) by Jason J — 17 Dec 2009
Very enjoyable movie charting the disastrous 44 day reign that ol big 'ead Brian Clough had as manager of Leeds United during 1974. It also shows how he managed to take a 2nd division team Derby County to winning the 1st division title. But Clough's obsession with bettering former Leeds boss Don Revie was to be his downfall at Leeds and losing the players respect by calling them cheats and bullies.
Michael Sheen is incredible as Clough mimicking his mannerisms down to a tee. Timothy Spall deserves praise for portraying Clough's right hand man Peter Taylor and Colm Meaney is also great as Don Revie. The filmmakers faithfully recreate the 1970's and use historic footage to capture the time perfectly. Some facts have been changed though for the film most notably Clough's days at Brighton & Hove Albion.
This is a very engaging movie which football lovers will like.
