Review of The Damned United (2009) by Jose M — 20 Feb 2010
Just when Michael Sheen couldn't have looked any better after his monstrous turn in last year's Oscar contender, "Frost/Nixon;" he goes and delivers what is arguably an even better performance in this underrated British gem.
This is without a doubt the best film dealing with soccer that I've ever seen, and Sheen's job of acting and his interplay with the supporting players is without a doubt the reason for it. The intensity of the rivalry between Sheen's character, Brian Clough, and rival Leeds United Coach Don Revie, is certainly palpable throughout the film, and takes center stage, along with the man himself.
This is far more a character study than a conventional sports film, and a very damned good one at that. Deserved more attention at the Academy Awards for Sheen's remarkable talent, and Tom Hooper's resonant direction.
