Review of The Damned United (2009) by Richard H — 27 Feb 2010
Screenwriter Peter Morgan has become quite the specialist in the biopic (with the odd imagined scene for dramatic effect) and this might be the best of the trilogy (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) with Martin Sheen, his consummate English actor of choice, in terrific form.
A fractured timeline is deployed to make it crystal clear what Brian Clough's motives were, almost to simplistic effect. But it gives the film great shape and a focussed trajectory that interestingly ends in another interview as climax.
Thoroughly entertaining exploration of a complex character who battles his own ego, performed with great style and wit by Sheen, supported by some of England's best character actors in Broadbent and Spall.
