Review of The Damned United (2009) by Chris F — 02 Mar 2010
I had to watch "The Damned United" because I'm a big fan of Michael Sheen after his performances in "The Queen" and "Frost/Nixon." When will he be nominated for an Oscar? While not overly thrilled about this movie, it does portray the complex life of an English football manager, Brian Clough in the 70s.
Clough loves to brag but when given the chance of managing Leeds United, simply bombs. He's more interested in upstaging the previous coach Don Revie and antagnozing the players. It seems Leeds United is an unruly team but Clough is egotistical. The supporting acting is fine by Jim Broadbent (chairman), Timothy Spall ( BFF), and Colm Meany ( Revie). It's just that I didn't get to understand the character Clough and, frankly, didn't care too much about him.
Michael Sheen is a fine character actor and he's been overlooked while his costars get the glory. I look forward to seeing him carry a great movie.
