Review of The Damned United (2009) by Kevin D — 27 Apr 2010
Knowing the time, the events and the people involved, this is an excellent portrayal of a very charismatic, but prickly character, viz Brian Clough ("the best manager England never had"). Clough was infuriatingly arrogant and cocksure, but, with his training partner Peter Taylor, TWICE took nobody teams to the very top of the game - even though neither team was stuffed with international players or "stars".
This film cleverly takes a blip in his career as the fulcrum to tell his story. Michael Sheen inhabits the character brilliantly once again, in this third biopic collaboration with writer Peter Morgan (The Queen and Frost/Nixon).
