Review of The Damned United (2009) by Cory W — 31 May 2010
This is one of the most fantastic sports movies I've ever seen. Probably the best of the 21st century so far. Michael Sheen shines as Brian Clough, a haudy soccer manager who is famous with his partner (played by Timothy Spall) for taking bottom-rate soccer clubs and turning them into top-winning teams.
Clough has a reason for all of his actions. He wants to defeat and be better than famed Leeds United manager Don Revie. The film tells of Clough's glory days at Derby Country and also tells of his failure at his Leeds position, the one which he solely took to obtain his goal of topping Reive.
Sheen's performance is brilliant. He takes the role and sprints to the finish line with it and goes an extra mile or two. The story seems too good to be true, but history does hold some amazing stories.
I'm not a soccer fanatic, but I truly enjoyed every single minute of this film. I'm a big fan of Sheen, and this is the best performance I've ever seen him do. He develops the character to a tee.
Clough goes from a brilliant manager, to an ignorant fool, to a redeemed manager, back to a fool, and ends up back where he started. I highly recommend this movie for anyone who enjoyes the sports-based tale, or anyone just looking for a good one to watch.
Overall, "The Damned United" shoots, scores, and wins.
