Review of The Damned United (2009) by Antony G — 17 Jul 2010
This film looks at the ill-fated 44 days Brian Clough was at Leeds United. Michael Sheen (Underworld, Twilight Saga) plays Brian Clough brilliantly. The film jumps back to and from Clough's successful spell at Derby County where he took them from the bottom of the old Second Division to Champions of England and his struggles with the Leeds players and their refusal to accept Clough and remain loyal to Don Revie who had left to take the England job.
Brian Clough always believed the game should be played the right way and tried with almighty failure to instill this onto the Leeds players. We also get to see how Clough lost his job at Derby after he got a bit too big for his boots and believing he was untouchable.
Despite his failure at Leeds he went on to achieve greatness at Nottingham Forest doing what he did at Derby taking them from nowhere winning the League and The European Champions Cup two years on the trot, a feat no British club or manager has achieved since.
