Review of The Damned United (2009) by Bernard T — 12 Aug 2010
On airplanes, it pays to sometimes choose the more obscure movies that never show up on the big screen. This BBC production on Brian Clough's 44 day reign as manager of Leeds United in 1973 was just magnificent.
For anybody who has watched the game from the 70s till his passing in 2004, he and Peter Taylor will be recognised as the greatest management team of all time, taking two relatively unknowned clubs - Derby County and Nottingham Forest, to the top of the league, and with the latter, to win two European Cups.
Charismatic, outspoken, and often controversial, Clough was a character that coloured football for 20 years. And this show may not be historically accurate in all its details, but sufficiently so to portray Clough.
