Review of The Da Vinci Code (2006) by Jason R — 31 Mar 2012
This film is very action-y, and very atmospheric in a number of ways. The plot is intriguing, the mystery engaging, but it loses a great deal when it comes to the characters. Ian McKellen is the only one who has the true gusto about him, playing his role admirably.
The insinuation that the Church is responsible for coverups as to the nature of divinity and Christ is one the film industry has tackled before, and one that it will surely go at again. Some of the parts involving the Church conspiracy are unclear, and Alfred Molina's character's motives are not explained well enough to justify jumping to him, and Silas' role is also unclear in several ways due to this ambiguity.
That said, the ideas advanced in the film about the possible true nature of Christ can certainly be thought-provoking, thereby allowing the film to transcend pure entertainment. But its fumbles with the conspiracy and lack of character depth prevent it from being truly great.
