Review of The D Train (2015) by F B — 27 Oct 2015
Well, I'll say this for it: this movie was not what I expected. I thought this would be a marginally funny romp, akin to "Neighbors" or "We're the Millers", but in reality this is a dark comedy.
Though it's a stretch to call it that because it's not funny (I laughed exactly once during the whole film) and really not that dark either. The story is about a loser (played, of course, by Jack Black) who decides that the only way to get people to come to his 20th high school reunion is by convincing the coolest kid in the class (played, of course, by James Marsden) to come.
The one good thing about this film is that it's not predictable. You think you know where it's going, but it totally switches lanes about 30 minutes in and becomes something really weird..
.. I won't spoil it for you in case you decide to watch the movie, but prepare to be uncomfortable for the rest of the film. Let's just say the movie redefines 'bromance'. The performances are actually pretty good, Black and Marsden put as much as they could into their characters.
It's just that the characters themselves are not believable, nor is the premise. Even worse, it forces a bizarre, tacked-on "I've learned something today.." message at the end, though I'll be damned if I could figure out what that was.
The whole movie is just a mess and totally missed the mark. If you want to watch a good dark comedy about high school reunions, watch "Gross Pointe Blank" instead. True to its name, "The D Train" gets a solid D.
