Review of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) by Kay K — 08 Jan 2013
I came into this film a little sceptical- the idea of someone being born old and growing young is all well and good in a short story but would it transfer over onto the screen?
Well, yes and no.
The special effects, make up, cinematography and smooth transition between sets and times made it believable in a visual sense but at the same time it felt a little lacking.
While the performances from the cast were all solid, particularly Cate Blanchett's, I felt Brad Pitt was the wrong choice. It wasn't that he performed badly, but he didn't seem to fit the character. I think if a stronger actor had been chosen for the role, the movie might have turned out a whole lot different.
And while it's harsh to say, perhaps the director having previously directed 'Fight Club' had something to do with Pitt's starring role.
A beautiful-looking film with some touching moments, some great characters (Button's adoptive mother for one), but could have been better.
