Review of The Crying Game (1992) by Elgan D — 12 Sep 2012
Irish people don't go to see Irish films because all we ever make are films about the troubles and that's it. That's probably the reason why this film flopped in the UK. It was successful in the US though, because they didn't care if the main character was an IRA man, they only cared about the relationship between Fergus and Dill. Stephen Rea is on top form as the IRA man with a heart of gold who's not really sure who he is until he meets Jody and Dill and Jaye Davidson is very good as Dill and deserved an oscar nomination. Sadly, this and Stargate are the only films he acted in.
I knew about the twist before I saw the film, from comedy shows. Gene Siskel even ruined the twist in an episode of "At the Movies". But, that didn't spoil my enjoyment of the film.
In a nutshell, this is one of the best Irish films ever made.
The only things I didn't like were Forest Whittaker's "Tottingham" accent and Miranda Richardson's "Belfast" accent. "Do yu like mah hur. I'm sic of been a blun." Ugh.
