Review of The Crow: City of Angels (1996) by Jim M — 02 Feb 2008
Ashe and his son are killed by a gang of drug dealers, a year later a Crow ressurects Ashe so he my take vengeance on the gang. A retread of the first, Vincent Perez is a good replacement for the late Brandon Lee (though IMHO Lee is the only Crow), Mia Kirshner is good as the girl from the first all grown up, and Thomas Jane, Thuy Trang (The Yellow Power Ranger acting unPower Ranger like), and Iggy Pop, are great as the deranged henchman/woman.
Richard Brooks leaves something to be desired as the Drug Lord, until the end where he's finally given something to work with. The film has an interesting look to the city, gothic and nightmarish.
The music deceint but again not on par with the first. The kills are not as imaginative or meaningful as the first, and the symbolism is kinda heavy handed here. The films biggest problem is that studio execs tried to make this too much like the first, cutting a bunch of scenes that would have flushed out the story more and help the movie stand on its own.
One can only hope with the writer David S. Goyer, star on the rise they'll release an uncut version until then watch it if its on TV, but stick with the original if your going shill out money for this.
