Review of The Crossing Guard (1995) by Gearoid O — 14 Nov 2007
I am definitely a Sean Penn fan, and this movie is an example of why.
It's about pain. Two men are forever linked - one, the father of a girl killed by a drunk driver; the other, the drunk driver.
Nicholson is a man who isn't living because of the pain of loss. He's waiting for the day the drunk driver gets out of jail so he can kill him. Morse is the drunk driver, out, and trying to pick up the pieces and live. But his guilt is too much, and he too can't get beyond his past.
Both these men will need each other to break the bonds of the past and get on with life.
This movie is gritty (as only Nicholson can be), but it's also real, dealing with a tragedy and how it affects so many people.
No explosions, wild stunts...just a human drama exploring pain, vengeance, forgiveness, release.
