Review of The Crossing Guard (1995) by Will J — 07 Jul 2008
To say that Sean Penn is obsessed with Cassavetes is an understatement. While Penn can capture those lightning bolts of honesty that Cassavetes conjures up constantly in his films, He only does them here and there and they lack the spontaneity of Cassavetes.
Penn also gives into stylistic pretensions that Cassavetes was careful to avoid in his own films. This film is pretty much a mediocre retelling of The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie, nothing more, nothing less.
