Review of The Crossing Guard (1995) by Chris M — 22 Mar 2010
Although it lingers a bit too much on the pauses and silent close-ups, this is unlike any other vengeance movie I've ever seen; and I mean that as a compliment to writer/director Sean Penn.
It usually takes a violent crime, a plausible actor and a series of action sets to sell the idea, but 'The Crossing Guard' is not that simple. This is a very realistic movie about a man struggling to cope with a serious loss. Jack Nicholson is one actor who can do just about anything, and even when he's on the brink, we have no trouble believing he is the real deal.
