Review of The Crime of Padre Amaro (2002) by Natty C — 20 Feb 2010
This is a compelling drama, but I have to say, I'm surprised it caused so much controversy since it's basically a morality tale. It does work as a melodrama though, in part due to the talented cast giving it their all, but that doesn't make the storyline any less predictable.
And even though I could feel the passion and chemistry between the two protagonists in the heat of the moment, it's hard to believe their sudden attraction is anything more than lust. Maybe that's the point, but it doesn't make this work as a love story.
This is still an important film though, if for no other reason than its willingness to draw attention to important social and political issues, and the story is enough to satisfy you if you aren't looking for too much depth.
