Review of The Crime of Padre Amaro (2002) by Jason Y — 16 Oct 2004
I had heard such good things about this movie that I really was expecting nothing short of a masterpiece. I rented it over the weekend and while I rejoiced in not having to read the subtitles, I found the movie to be far less than the eighth world wonder that people were trying to sell it to me as.
It was a good movie in the sense that it was well made and all, but it had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Acting was awesome and locations were pretty and everything. The plot was somewhat interesting, though it had several cheesy lines. Fortunately, they were lost in translation.
As for the "it's a great movie" comments, I must say that they mostly came from my friends back home in Venezuela. So, according to a very small and non-representative sample, movie was much more well liked in Latin countries than it was in the US. It's still worthwhile to watch it though.
