Review of The Counterfeiters (2007) by Brandon W — 20 Feb 2009
Excellent excellent film!. Finally a story about the Holocaust that actually offers something new and portrays the protagonists (or the antagonists for that matter) *not* as martyrs (or one-dimensionally soulless villains), but just as people trying to get by.
This is a story that, to some degree, humanizes this chapter of history with all those involved...It tells the story how the Nazis weren't just egomaniacal and murderous stooges with grand plans to take over the world, but that they were capable of being counterfeiters also. It also shows that those involved with the Nazis did not all have one agenda, but were just trying to survive like anyone else in a f*cked up time. It's an incredibly engrossing tale, considering that it is based on a true story, and one I never knew about personally--the film is based on the book 'THE DEVIL'S WORKSHOP' by Adolf Burger, who was a Slovak Holocaust survivor (and put to work by the Nazis at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp to counterfeit British and American currency during WWII).
