Review of The Counselor (2013) by Edward C — 02 Apr 2014
Although it's the most baldly misogynistic film I've seen in a long while, and despite a plot that is only jabs and shards pointing to a plot, it is mesmerizing. That is, there is something indisputably great.
It could be only that Scott is a terrific director who can turn almost any material into something gripping. But I think it has to do with the genuine feeling of horror and sorrow we feel for Fassbinder's Councelor as his plan goes south.
All the male performances here are terrific. The woman far less so, and it's hard to account for. Only Perez in her small part really shines. But then the women are given far less to.
